No, not an advert. Just a suggestion.

If you haven't done so in a while, take a few moments go to your cable company's web site and check on the current prices for your cable TV package and internet service -- not what you are paying, but what the standard rate is for new subscribers -- the price they will be paying once the initial 3 to 6 month offer expires.

I recently canceled my cable TV service, and while I was checking the web site I found out that the standard price for my level of internet service was $5/month cheaper than I was paying. I have been with the same company since cable internet service started (at least 8 years) so I was not happy that they were charging me, a loyal customer, more than new subscribers.

When I complained all I got was a shrug ("it's what we do") but they did at least put me on the new rate. So, it's worth checking to see if you're also being "rewarded" for being a loyal customer.

I know that when Verizon puts up new packages for FIOS they tend to make them available for existing customers, as long as we are willing to commit to the contract length - perhaps it is because of their background in the cell phone business where that is pretty typical. Having said that, I would like my bill to be lower :)

I'm going to try and shave off $10-20 a month by removing a couple of boxes, etc.

Nope! Only because we ditched it a couple of months ago though. Before that is was too much. We wanted to cut back to the very basics - local channels only level but even that was going to cost us over $40/month since the digital change over. So we dumped it and just use Netflix. We do have high-speed internet through the cable company as well as our phone service. My husband is a software developer who works from home full time so good high-speed internet is a necessary expense, not a luxury around here. I am planning to look into Vonage for phone service - once the introductory period expired on the package the phone got very expensive. I did compare the listed rates to what we were paying (I did this when we were deciding to change service levels, cancel etc) and it was the same rate.

When I tried to cut down on my cable service, they offered me an additional promotional package. I am getting a fairly decent deal considering. All things considered, I still feel that I am paying more than I would like to though.

I thought it was a rhetorical question.

Between Boxee, Netflix and Hulu, I can see being at the point to give up cable...but I know that the owners of Hulu want to make it a paid service before much longer.

We've been a customer of Cablevision for years but we are switching. For what we pay, and I don't know what that is since dad pays the bill, they keep cutting out channels. We have like 80 channels on our system and we get about half or less. Everytime I want to see something and switch to that channel, I find we don't get it. Our internet is through AT&T. When we up grade to Verizon I think, we will change the internet service too.

early this year, my mother got a cable bill and it was more than what it should've been. she called to complain. turns out a free promotional offer had ended and the regular price kicked in. well, taht was too much and she told the person something was gonna have to give. so, after some conversation and hearing that my mother was gonna either cancel some services or go elsewhere, they decided to remove the monthly charge for one of the cable boxes, add the NFL channel plus several other sports channels (which normally cost extra), add all the other movie channels that we didn't have (which also normally cost extra). and to top it off, they removed $100 from the monthly bill. so they took $100 off and gave us about $100 worth of stuff. my mother said fine and that was that. after that, i began encouraging people i knew to regnotiate their cable costs.

My sister tried to negotiate her cable bill. Her ex owes over $4,000 in child support and they raised her bill after the introductory offer, I guess. She can't afford it. Know what they said? "Oh I'm sorry that you have to do that but there is nothing we can do if you feel you have to change." They wouldn't do anything! I'm betting she cried about living in low income housing, the child support, etc. With people changing cable or getting rid of it, you would think they would have done something. No way. Glad they did that for you mom.

I am considering taking a promotional rate for DSL, but I have been so happy with my cable internet, I am not so sure I am gonna do that at all.
