If you call 'gas', what we call 'petrol', what do you call what we call 'gas' (the gaseous fossil fuel that is used for cooking and heating homes)?

That's also called gas. The companies that sell it call it "natural gas".

Now that is confusing! So when people talk about the price of gas, how do you know which gas they mean? Or do people never talk about the price of (natural) gas?

When people talk about the price of gas, they are normally referring to the gas for their cars.

If they mean an increase in the cost of gas for their home, they would say their gas bill went up.
People don't usually talk much about the cost of utilities.

And then there's the "natural" gas that I've heard Brits refer to as "wind".

It's mostly contextual. I've never had a problem figuring out who was talking about which gas...now that you mention it.

If I am speaking of the gas that runs my car, I usually say gasoline.
Natural gas is what I use to heat and cook.

The "natural gas" that erupts regularly from Rick is called GROSS!

And I don't mind being called the Y word.

Yep.

Basically, you've got "gas" and you've got "natural gas." Or they may say "home heating costs" - but then, that could be electric or oil heat, too.

Then there's flatulence, which is always free.

Where does your natural gas come from? is it sourced in the USA or imported?

Our natural gas is sourced in the state I live in.

In my area, you see a lot of PUMPJACKS around here that are used to pump oil and natural gas out of the ground.

don't forget there's also propane gas (like what's used for a gas bbq). In some parts of the country they refer to it as "propane" but in other places I have heard it referred to simply as "gas" too.

That's LP (liquid propane). BUT we do call our grill a "gas grill."

Did you know that you can now attach your grill (specially outfitted) to your natural gas line from your house and run it off of that? One would never have to worry about running out of fuel!

Sorry--gotta ask--what is the "Y" word? Once you tell me I'll probably remember, but it's escaping me right now.

yeah if we had a gas line running out to the back we would do that, but we don't. If we ever do anything fancy out there we will do that though. We already have gas for the water heater and stove.

Within the continental US, people in the southern states call anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line yankees. Many people in the north are totally oblivious to it. Some are unaware.

Gasoline is what you put in your car.
Natural gas comes in underground gas lines to heat your homes.
LP is liquid petroleum stored in above ground tanks for heating homes. It is delivered by truck.

I'm well aware of where it comes from... but you all are still Yanks! I believe our usage of the word dates back to WWII.
