I am the Lord your God. Worship no God but me. Exodus 20:2.
As I look around me today I see many false gods. Celebrities for instance - whether sports personalities, singers, movie stars or whatever, with their adoring followers hanging on every word they say and eager to emulate them.
Material possessions are other false gods. Come round where I live on Sunday morning and see the people washing, cleaning and polishing their cars instead of going to church. See them lovingly maintaining their gardens, mowing the grass, pruning the bushes and idlolising the flowers.
Workaholics and fitness fanatics have their own gods too. Or excessively cleaning the house and being extra proud of its appearance and tidiness.
Maybe I'm rambling. But I see all these false gods as a distraction from the one true God we should be focussing on.
Have I got it wrong? Am I making too much fuss about nothing?

Some of that stuff isn't bad. There is no legalism in what you decide to do in your spare time and God doesn't really care as long as you don't put it first over him.
Proverbs 11:1
1) A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
You want to balance everything out in your life. I mean even reading the Bible too much is a bad thing. If you spend 24/7 hours a day reading the Bible and not really doing anything or trying to spread the word you just become intellectual about the Bible. If you spend 24/7 doing outreach you might neglect your own spiritual needs and not to mention you neglect those people who you are teaching and bringing up in the Word. It's important to do everything in balance, but also listen to what God wants you to do.

Now I know there are times when God has moved it in your heart to outreach 24/7 or read 24/7, I'm not really trying to write a handbook to how to live your day to day lives. I'm just pointing out in that general too much of one thing is bad in the long run, and that is backed up by scriptures.

Those people who are doing other things may have God first in their hearts, but there is no way that we would know that because we look on the outward appearance.

Christians who put anything before God are in danger of losing their first love. Christians may be shocked to realise that this includes good things too (including church and church activities).

I agree with some of the things you have said mvic. I also agree with TheBibleTruth too. Too much of a good thing...
Deuteronomy 8:19-20: 19 But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed. 20 Just as the Lord has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the Lord your God. I think that explains it for me on what happens to those who decide to focus their attention elsewhere.

IMHO, you are making a bit of a fuss.
I completely and whole-heartedly agree with the celebrity angle. Many people seem to be worshipping them. And oftentimes, people worship their material possessions.
But how can you know that people are "idolising their flowers?" True, maybe some people do, of course. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with caring for, tending to, and being proud of your home or garden.
Now, if these people miss church for the purpose of gardening, that's another story.
And excessively cleaning the house? That may be another issue, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're putting their house before God.
I am a self-proclaimed fitness fanatic. And even though fitness is very important to me, as well as my hobby, by no means do I put it before my God. Not in any way whatsoever. I wouldn't skip church, for example, to work-out instead.
Just my thoughts...

I dont think that many people consider any celebrity to be God, so therefore dosent worship them like they do God. So thats not the same thing.
What the Commandment means is talking about things like 'Buddah'. False Gods. Anything or religion that leads a person astray from the only ONE true God there ever will be.
