I have to use up my remaining vacation days or I lose them. Kids will be visiting their mother so I have some time for myself before the end of the year...
Here are the criteria - $500. Up to 2 weeks. I am on East coast (close to NYC, Phila, Baltimore, DC, Atlantic City). Time frame Dec 25 - Jan 3.
Where would you go? What would you do?
I actually looked at a cruise - despite the notion in an other thread something about no singles go on cruises. I would love to go on an Alaskan cruise, but singles are not welcome on cruise ships. Example - room for 2 people, 3 nights, $149/person. Same identical cruise, room, and length for a 1 person? $342. I understand double, but why more than double? Well, off topic.
Any ideas? What would you do? One of my hobbies is photography, but I can enjoy pretty much anything.

Wow, you've got a lot of options!!
Would $500 be plenty for gas and lodging and food if you drove? (And then there's the winter road conditions to consider.)
I love historic sites, so that's what I'd go do. Visit Biltmore (Asheville, NC) and see the gorgeous decor for the holidays. Or Williamsburg, VA. (I bet they do some neat stuff during Christmas.)
Of course, DC would offer plenty of things to do and see for two weeks (but would $500 be enough, if you don't have family to stay with there).
Or go to a nearby bed and breakfast and just have quiet time relaxing, reading, walking outside (weather permitting) and whatnot.
Or go to NYC and see shows.

Civil War Battlefields. Gettysburg and Antietam for sure. Harper's Ferry 'cause it's close and quaint.

Cool thread! A vacation looms on the horizon for me as well. A friend and I were planning a trip, but it doesn't look like she'll be able to travel after all. That opens wide my options. At the moment, I'm considering simply hopping into my car and driving until I see something interesting. After stopping, I can hit the road again until the next eye-catching point of interest reveals itself.
However, I don't know if I'll head east, north, or west (or northeast or northwest for that matter). Heading due south is out of the question because my trip wouldn't last more than fifteen-twenty minutes. My vehicle isn't a hovercraft. 
Regardless, a road trip makes for a wonderful vacation. You get plenty of time to think as much as you want, pray, and listen to music/sing/play drums on your steering wheel. You also get to see so many different ways that God manifests himself in his creation. Popping into local eateries allows you to converse with all kinds of people, too, that you might not otherwise have the pleasure to meet.

Another way to vacation is to go on a short service/evangelism mission. You spend some of the time seeing a new place but most of the time working for God.

Duh! Sorry about getting excited about my trip and not offering any specific ideas for your trip.  I lived in NYC for almost four years and have ventured off of many short, enjoyable trips.
* You could go hiking at the foot of the Adirondacks in upstate NY.
* A visit to Sleepy Hollow is a lot of fun, especially if you enjoyed Washington Irving's story, a fresh snow has fallen (and it isn't too cold), and at sundown you forgot where you parked your car.
* There are some local wineries in the Ithaca area that are interesting even if you don't imbibe. Check for potential seasonal closings, though.
I'll try to think of more ideas after a good night's sleep or two...

I am going to colorado after new years and just wander in the mountains.I used to enjoy that when I was stationed in Germany.

I don't know if you're an adventurous, or looking to have some fun that you wouldn't normally have, but the beaches where I live are BEAUTIFUL! They're the prettiest beaches in the country if I'm not mistaken.
I could hole myself for a week in a condo on the beach with nothing but a cooler of water, fruit and Heineken, a box of books, my iPod and my sunglasses.
Sit on the sand, read and listen to music and then when I got hot go for a dip, return, repeat.
*sigh*
And this is of couse without the Things. There is no such thing as relaxing with those two around.

Hmmm... I actually started to write down all the things I have done, but eh. I consider myself on a scale of A to 28 to be a blue when it comes to adventurous. Yes, that would be a very.

I did Europe. I mean, I think I hit most countries. Yes, Monaco. Of course Andorra. No, not Iceland - but in December? I said I am adventurous, not suicidal.
I actually was thinking of perusing some places I may retire...

Love the idea of hiking in the Adirondaks. SOmething I'd so love to do.
Hiking in Sedona sounds like a really great idea. Or hiking anywhere, actually.
One of my vacation plan for next year is to go to Colorado and start tackling the Colorado 14ers. There's 54 of those mountains that rises above 14000 ft and I plan on doing all of them in this lifetime. So, I better start early.
If anyone's interested, I'd welcome anyone who's up to the challenge!
I have a few more vacation ideas that doesn't include hiking, LOL! I'll post them when I get home!

Oh you are a single traveler after my own heart! I just broke up with my boyfriend and am SO excited about traveling on my own (my ALL TIME favorite vacation was a solo trip to Rome - I did what I want, when I wanted to!) and I'm also in the DC area. I too have been looking at cruises out of Baltimore (no airfare that way!).
Allow me to suggest the Yucatan Peninsula. Flights to Cancun are cheap (especially if you go in the off season) and staying there even cheaper. The people there (Mayans - many of whom don't even speak Spanish!) are THE NICEST people I've ever met (well, second may to the folks in Ireland) and the beach and nice weather is a gimme...
