My husband said he caught the end of Larry King live last night. Three guest astronomers said that the Pope declared them and ET's covered under the blood of Jesus! Did anyone else see that?!

I had heard the Vatican declared alien life a possibility, I hadn't heard it could be evanglized. Better start firing up that hyper-drive, there could be a lot of missionary work to be done.

Actually, upon rereading that link even more, I noticed that the Catholic Church declared that to insist that ‘God could not have made other worlds’ was declared a heresy back in the thirteenth century.

This is old news. :P

I have to admit I have always been interested in the theological implications of alien life at least in terms of the fictional stories that have been written about such things. Writers like Lewis, Bradbury, and Clarke, have all speculated about what other worlds and life forms would mean for our beliefs.

First, it wasn't the Pope, it was a Vatican astronomer who commented on this so please be clear about that. The Pope has not and will not 'declare' that aliens exist.

Second, a Vatican astronomer does not have power to speak for the Vatican in any official capacity or form, so also be clear about that.

Third, any 'pronouncement' is not binding on anyone, but merely speculation based on the use of faith and reason. Aliens are not now and never have been part of the Deposit of Faith of the Church.

Tag line for this thread is misleading and flat out incorrect, but that's what happens when you rely on the secular media.

How do you view Lurker's statement that denying alien life is heresy? Will it be a statement that worlds means physical worlds rather than the life itself? I certainly do not believe aliens exist. Does that make me a heretic? I am not being antagonistic; I just want some clarification from the Catholic posters.

The proper teaching is that denying that God COULD create alien life is heresy. God is omnipotent, this is a fundamental Christian dogma. If he could not make aliens, he would not be omnipotent. I agree with the Church teaching on this, don't you?

I do not disagree with God's power. I just fail to see why aliens are necessary to persuade people to recognize omnipotence. The bible says it, so this example is just hype.

I wasn't being misleading! This is what my husband told me! That's why I asked!

He's fired up about it and is going to show the church the Unidentified film. It's a film that indicates that when we are taken up with Jesus Christ that the world will explain that aliens took us away. That the whole concept of aliens is demonic deception.

Does anyone know if it's true that the people who say they've been abducted by aliens smelt sulfur? I'm gullible enough to believe the film.

Maybe I read this incorrectly, the 'aliens are necessary' was meant differently? If you were not saying that the Church teaches aliens are necessary, then we agree. Regarding the 'hype', I don't see your point. If someone asks an astronomer from the Vatican if he believes in aliens and what the implications of that are, is he supposed to say 'that's just hype'? Or should he answer the question to the best of his ability, given the Christian Truths he believes in?

Yes, I read all three (though it's been a little while now); I like the way Lewis tends to use other worlds to highlight certain Christian ideas and truths. In fact, I think that is the primary purpose of science fiction (the good kind, any way) is to explore ideas and possibilites that reflect on our own experiences.

No, I didn't find it, either.

What I did find:

1. The British Ministry of Defense released its UFO data. One of the former ministers was on the panel. His name: Nick Pope.

2. The following statement was made by a guest:

That is the point of Perelandra, Wes--it is like Earth, but without the Fall. Read it--it is pretty neat.
