Last season we had an ongoing thread about CI. Will anyone be watching this season?

The show starts tonight; the first 3 episodes (tonight, then next Monday and Tuesday - I think only 3 episodes) are auditions.

9:00 Eastern Time on CTV!

I'm recording it since I have a meeting tonight that probably won't get over on time.

Yes, I will be watching again this year! Our church's worship leader was on Canadian Idol a few years ago, and did very well. He wasn't our worship leader then. We have another person living on our street who also did well. Considering how successful he has become, I'm surprised he is still living in a basement suite in our average neighborhood.

My DVR time was set wrong, so I missed the last few minutes of the episode last night.

I suppose there's not much to say about the audition shows, but I do want to say that I liked the lead-in (the story, the clips of previous seasons, etc), and I think it's cool how they integrated images of the previous winners in with the opening theme song.

I don't watch much American Idol, but I have watched enough to see how much more gracious (and how much less cruel) the Canadian judges and producers/editors seem to be. Yes, the judges are truthful and at times hard-hitting, but there seems to be a lot less mocking of contestants than on AI.

Maybe it's just a result of the kinder, gentler Canadian mentality.

I'm not sure about the whole Jully Black addition. Maybe when the competition starts (after the top 22 are picked) she'll become less superfluous.

I liked both of the brothers who got in.

Maybe this year I'll keep track of who they do those background stories on and see if they all make it into the top 22. I've always wondered about that!

I agree about the Canadian judges, I like them so much better.

I find it interesting who you can't tell by looking at people what type of singer they will be. Sometimes I think to myself, this person looks like they are going to be a terrible singer, and then they turn out to be good. I like that.

Is Jully Black that women who was warming up with the contestants?

I liked those two brothers too.

Yes, that's who Jully Black was - the on on the couch with contestants in that one segment, the one singing (and getting that one girl to sing "Amazing Grace") in the warm up room, etc.

Last night's episode wasn't much to comment on. They only showed 2 "back stories" - the lounge singer guy and the blonde girl that Sass didn't want to advance to Toronto.

I have no idea why they advanced that death/speed/whatever-other-kind-of metal guy. Is it for comedic relief? They advanced a guy like that last year, too. (That guy decided that he was there as a joke and left voluntarily, IIRC.) When his dad came in and sang some opera, he sang along for a bit, so he can sing at least some. But that whole growly thing isn't what CI is all about.

That guy from Pakistan was funny! His singing was average - it wasn't HORRIBLE (or even BAD) like some are, but that dancing was torture!

Woohoo! Canadian Idol! Here are my thoughts so far:

Why is it, they only show something like 4 auditions per city? They really don't show many auditions.

Why would they tell the Afghani girl, who is a You Tube sensation that she is not ready for this competition, but put the death metal guy through?

I think when the show starts, Jully Black is going to be more of a mentor to the participants, she'll be working with them throughout the week when they are choosing songs and rehearsing (I believe.)

What I absolutely LOVE about Canadian Idol, is the way it represents Canadian culture and music. Think about it, more than half of the people they put through to Toronto would never make it to Hollywood on American Idol. AI is looking for someone who fits a standard mainstream role, where as CI is taking people of all sorts and all styles and I think we come across some very unique people.

I'm looking forward to this season. Even Ben Mulroney isn't getting on my nerves this year (though it's still early). I'm hoping maybe I can pull off tickets to a show this year.

I suppose if they showed more auditions per city, they'd have to have a lot more air time for the auditions. As it is now, it's only 3 hours on the air.

I do think it'd be better to show more auditions than to show the Jully Black segments, though.

And I agree about that Afghani girl. I thought she was really good and should've moved on.

That was sad last night about that one contestant with the mom with cancer. I wonder if she lived to know how far he went in Toronto. (I'm assuming it wasn't far - he was good, but not great. I think they put him through because of his mom. And I think the soldier got through on sympathy votes, too - he wasn't that great, either.)

I was surprised they let that growling guy through too. At least they should have asked him to sing, on his own.

I wish they did show more audition shows, my kids love them, and more of the on line auditions. I guess the quality of those wouldn't make for good viewing though.

Dh and I were, ummmm, very surprised (?) by the 17 year old boy who is becoming a girl.

The guy with the mom with cancer had tears running down my face. I didn't think he was that great, but he could probably do well enough, and it's nice that his mom got that present of knowing he was on the road before she passed away.

I agree with you Tricia about the soldier as well. He was ok, but there was nothing to wow you, other than his story.

It seems to me that a lot of mediocrity went through to Toronto this year, I'm hoping that the people they didn't show will be spectacular.

Ugh. Yeah.

When I first saw him/her, I thought it was an ugly girl. His/her voice seemed feminine, albeit on the lower end of the female range. But when he/she sang, it sounded like a boy to me.

I suppose they gave him/her his/her 2 minutes of fame for the sake of "diversity".

When I first saw him/her I said "oh that's a boy."

Dh and I were talking about how Jully Black looked very uncomfortable at first when he/she hugged her. Dh is Jamaican and so is Jully Black and the whole gay/transgender thing is just not acceptable at all in that culture, there is a lot of hatred toward it. We were wondering how she was going to be able to handle it on camera (not saying she has that hatred). I don't know what I would have said or done.

I don't understand how that guy from Africa keeps staying. From what I hear, he's not that good. Maybe it's his charisma? Maybe it sounds better in person than on TV? Maybe they need their quota of males?

And don't get me started on Mr. Dangly Earrings.

Well, we'll see how it goes tonight. Those two might end up going home anyway.

LOL...I was trying to figure out how I was going to describe him since I can't remember his name. Him and his partner in the group song, I don't get why either of them are still there.

Same with the African guy, he sounds good, can carry a tune, but I think much better people have been sent home before him. He must sound better in person.

After last night, I like one of the two brothers from Portugal, Omar, the construction worker from Hamilton, and Theo Tams. I honestly can't remember any of the girls they showed. I would really like to see how the musical theatre girl did (I know she's on tonight's show but they never showed her last night).

If Dangly Earrings goes through, I may have to rethink my decision to watch the show. At that point, it would just be a farce (though he does sound so oddly like Amy Winehouse)

(Now you don't get this kind of conversation with American Idol eh?)

I agree with the ones you like. There were some good girls, but for some reason they do seem to be less memorable.

I'm guessing that they'll all make it through, since they're focusing on them so much.

Looking through the photos on the web site, I do like Tatyana and Carly. There were a couple others, but I don't feel like looking them up. :)

Regarding Dangly Earrings (name is Nickolaus or some such spelling): even if they put him through to the top 22, I doubt he'd last very long once the public get to vote. At least, I'd hope not!

Top 24!

And with the women being less memorable, there are fewer of them than men. Hmmm!

In the audition episodes, I kept track of who had the background stories - the ones where the film crew went to their home, work, etc. - to see who of them made it and who didn't. Here are the results:

Omar - in
Oliver & Sebastian Pigott - both in
Jesse Cottam - in
Pat Milino (the lounge singer) - out
Katelyn Dawn (the blonde who rehearsed with her family in the living room) - in
Jonathan Whitehead (armed forces guy) - out (on the 1st day)
Dan Young (mom had cancer) - out (not sure when - 2nd day?)
Jade Padua (arts school student) - out
Adam Castelli (I think he was a construction worker for his brother's company) - in
Mitch MacDonald (I don't remember his story - he's from NS) - in

So there ya go!

Interesting, that it's a top 24 full of men. I will say that I didn't find the female talent to be that great this year. I'm looking at a list of finalists, and some of the women I still can't remember who they are.

Lisa Bee and Marie-Pierre Bellerose who did the sing off - I thought they were both really good.

Adam Castelli - is a favourite of mine though I felt he talked way too much when they were giving him the results.

Mark Day - what a voice! I remember him now from earlier on and he can definitely sing.

Martin Kerr - I also liked (and meant to mention him in my last post, thought he was great).

Omar Lunan - I think he'll go far (I knew he seemed familiar! He's been in the recording industry around her for a while, and has home videos of him singing into a webcam on youtube!)

Mookie Morris - I think we might see some incredible things from him (although I could be disappointed as well)

Tetiana Ostapowych - my favourite female contestant right now

Oliver and Sebastian Pigott - I like Oliver, don't like Sebastian (his style is just strange to me)

Katherine St-Laurent - seems pretty good.

Theo Tams - like him

Drew Wright - was pretty good, didn't notice him at all until last night's episode.

The rest of the names I can't place with faces.

And I don't get what the big deal about Cyberboy was.

I'm glad Dangly Earrings didn't make it. lol. I liked one of the two brothers better than the other, but I don't remember his name, or the names of others I liked. Our family thought it was funny that the guy named Adam was so talkative, because our son Adam is talkative too.

I have my laptop on and Notepad open during the show. Here's what I wrote down:

Lindsay Barr - okay

Martin Kerr - I like him as a person and like his voice and performance, but I can't see him as the winner.

Gary Morissette - Yeah, he's this season's rocker! I'm not into that style, but he's entertaining, and it looked like he had fun!

Tetiana Ostapowych - I like her! Great voice, great performance. I liked how she restyled it.

Mitch MacDonald - Good/okay. He seems... fresh.

Paul Clifford - He doesn't look like a winner. I don't know how many slightly goofy looking people win. :o) Singing was good/okay.

Earl Stevenson - On his bio he seemed a little weird, like he's not all there. I wouldn't call him Mr. Personality. I didn't like his singing and performance, either. I'm surprised at the judges' all-positive comments. Did he sing in a key?

Lisa Bell - I like her! Great performance, I like her voice.

Mookie Morris - I like him; not sure about his singing and performance, though.

Drew Wright - I like his personality. He seems like the guy next door. Interesting vocal range on the song. :)

Oliver Pigott - Weird growliness. It seemed to detract from the performance. He's talented, but I just didn't care for his performance. I agree with the judges - it was too over the top.

Katherine St-Laurent - I like her. The song is done too often, but she did it very well.

My votes: Gary, Tetiana, Lisa, Drew, Katherine

I watched the show last night, but it's too early for me to have favorites. I was surprised with the way Oliver Pigott sang. I thought we had enough rockers without one more. I like rock, just not the screamy type.

Jesse Cottam - okay - I liked the lower register stuff; didn't care so much for the upper register/shouting. It seemed like he struggled with staying on key in the upper register.

Mark Day - That song is SO overdone on Idol. He sang it fine. I like his personality.

Jessica Sheppard - I like her! Of course, she's from our town (last year, anyway - she must have moved). Strong voice, great control.

Shaun Francisco - I liked it, but his performance seemed a bit boring to me. (Is he the one Jake had called boring in his audition?)

Lindsay Robins - I love her hair! High energy like the other Lindsay was, but she sang better than the other one.

Omar Lunan - I like him, didn't like his song - the singing nor the arrangement. I'm with Zack on this one. It seemed like he had big pitch issues.

Marie-Pierre Bellerose - I like her. She had a good performance.

Sebastian Pigot - He seemed so real in his facial expressions. He could've had more energy after he stood up. (But I liked how he started sitting.)

Theo Tams - I hate his hair. I love his voice.

Amberly Thiessen - I like her voice. Interesting back story, having been ignorant of popular music. I didn't care for her dress. ;) I agree that she was vulnerable and real.

Adam Castelli - Fun performance! I like his voice, too.

Katelyn Dawn - I couldn't understand many of the words, and she seemed weak when she hit some of the higher notes. I didn't care for it.

My picks from tonight: Jessica, Marie-Pierre, Theo, Amberly, and Adam

Those I thought sang well:

Sebastian Pigot - I usually like his brother's singing better, but not this week

Theo Tams - His hair reminds me of the evil character on The Incredibles

Amberly Thiessen

Adam Castelli

Mark Day

Jessica Sheppard

I agree. I do think that Sebastian needs to come out from his brother's shadow, though - everything seems to be about how he admires his brother, copies his brother, etc. - he needs to find himself and realize he's an artist in his own right.

I'm somewhat disappointed. I'm not happy to see Tetiana and Lindsay Robins go. The other two I was indifferent about anyway.

Ok, I just finished watching the results show and now I can go over everything (my internet has been down all week!) Thankfully I have Tricia's posts to remind me of everyone!

1st night

Enjoyed listening to Martin speak Canadian, but don't think he can win the show.

I loved Tetiana, she is (was) my favourite girl.

Loved Lisa (now she's my favourite girl).

I think Mookie is great but I wonder what exactly his range is if he even has one.

I loved Oliver until this performance. It was downright disturbing.

Katherine was very good.

Everyone else was just ok.

2nd night

I really liked Mark. The song was ok, and at times I couldn't tell if I was hearing him or the background singer, but he is talented and funny.

I like Omar for the fact that he was a nice break from all the rockers. Rock isn't my type of music, though if it's good it's good and I'll admit it, but I feel like everyone is the same this year.

Sebastien needs to give the guitar stance back to his brother. I find that I don't mind him so much if I close my eyes while he sings.

LOVED LOVED LOVED Theo. He's my favourite of all. I love that song and I actually think he did a much better job than the guy who recorded it.

Amberly surprised me. I didn't remember her at all and I think she was fantastic. So real and so sweet.

Adam is still at the top of my list. He was very good.

The Results

Very surprised to see Tetiana go, that is disappointing. I think she and the Pigott brothers should form a group after the show.

The other three I'm not that disappointed to see go. Though, watching three of the girls is kind of disappointing. It will definitely be a guys year, but I thought Tetiana would definitely be one of the girls to stand out among them all.
