Are you going to be able to take some test shots before the wedding? I can't imagine the stress of shooting a wedding in an untested environment. I don't know how the wedding photographers do it and I shot professional video for 15+ years.

I've only got a D70. I'm shooting a wedding (for a friend) in Aug. It's going to be great - old church with tons of natural lighting. The reception location has a GREAT area too. My co-worker just got married, so she's letting me go through their proofs to get other ideas.

I have shot with Nikon for most of my life. I want the D300, but it's going to be a while before I can afford that. Maybe now, with it coming out, I can get a used 200 at a decent price.

In reality, I shoot mostly professional soccer.

Nope, no test shots, but I'm sure on Friday when I arrive I can go over there early to see everything and fire off a few. I'm not concerned. I've adapted to nearly every situation over the years.

yeah, yeah, yeah, I know - thankfully it's a friend....... I'll have plenty of time to get in there and shoot stuff when I first arrive. I'll be there early. At least I'm not being asked to do the hair/makeup (like normal).

Woot! Just ordered the XSi with kit lens and the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Macro Lens, which from all reports I've seen takes AWESOME macro pictures.

I was kind of not sure if I should order the kit lens or not since I was getting the macro (could have saved $100 by not getting it) but figure it could be useful in some cases where the macro lens isn't. From what I understand the macro lens can do "normal" pictures pretty well also. Just not zoom.

I think I will want a telephoto lens at some point but my wallet needs to recover from this. I think I want to focus on macro photography for the time being anyway.

That is a wonderful combination. The first non-kit lens that I bought when I first moved to the Canon SLR from Olympus, was the 100mm macro and I have not regretted it for a single instant. In fact, I have it with me as I write this and plan to take it to Longwood Gardens for some bug and flower shooting.

When I moved to the XSi, I included the 18-55 SI kit lens and for the money it is not bad. It's a lot better than the kit lens on the XTi. I have not had any of the focus issues that some people claim to have with the kit lens. But, I've been working with SLRs a long time and I suspect some of the focus problems have to do with AF setting selection. However, should you have any problem, feel free to PM me.

I love the XSi. And, the combination of 100mm macro with LiveView is a real winner. I'll try to post some 100mm shots for you to see if I get anything interesting.

The most important button on your XSi is the AEL button on the top left of the back of the camera. Learn to use that well with flash photos and you will get some stunning photos. Most camera stores have the Gary Fong Puffer. I'd advise anyone that has an SLR and just an internal flash to pick one up. They cost $20 at Ritz. It disburses and softens the flash. I use it indoors and out as a fill when I don't have my external flash attached. It's a great investment.

And, the best place to meet people that have the XSi is at the DPReview XT/XTI/XSI forums. There are thousands of users that can help you out.

What focal length was the lens?

I've been using a Nikon D50 at a client's and I'm quite impressed. The only lens they have is the AF-S 24-120 VR and it seems very sharp. The camera's focus is excellent.

One of the things that threw me when I started using the Nikon was that I could not get the AE-Lock to work as it should. It turned out that the menu option that I needed was off the screen and I didn't scroll down far enough.

AE-Lock is, to me, one of the most important things to learn to use when shooting with a flash. I only wish that I had found it when I had my first digital SLRs many years ago. The other, for those of you that only have an onboard flash, is a $20 Puffer that softens your flash. It will change your indoor shots enormously.

If you do use an external flash, I highly recommend Gary Fong's LightSphere-II (Cloud) with the optional AmberDome.

There are videos showing how both are used on the links above.

I have the Canon 20D and I absolutely love it ! I first started out with the Canon Rebel 2000. A really good camera to start out with. Then I went on to the Canon Elan7. Also an all around excellant camera. Actually all of these camera's do the job for portrait photography which is my interest. Good to hear everyones favorites. The camera doesn't make the photo - but rather the photographer !

But, a good camera, lens and lighting sure does help.

What has become intriquing to me is that photography is multiple disciplines and each discipline has it's own character. Just because one can take great scenic shots, doesn't mean that they can take great portraits and vice-versa. So, one is always in a constant state of learning. I enjoy reading the lessons on the Web Photo School, which ia connected to Photoflex lighting and possibly Canon.

I'm most familiar with 'hot' lights (continuous lighting); but, I've been looking over their strobe lessons and have learned a lot from them.

Just bought my first digital camera, so I'm not too fancy with all the "camera terms" that everyone is using. It's a Canon PowerShot A470. If size is your thing then this is not for you - it cannot be slipped into your pocket, but it will fit in your handbag.

I have yet to really test it, but the instruction booklet says to do test shots first before you enter into an "These are the photos I want" situation.

Hi Ebony,

The nice thing about the A470 is that the megapixels it takes is in the 'sweet spot' for a digital camera of that size. Many times, when you get above 7mpx you gain resolution at the expense of what's known as 'dynamic range' which can affect the colors of the image. You made a great choice.

This means that you should be able to take some great pictures. And, the book is right. Nothing beats practice.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XTi.

I am coveting the 100mm Macro folks...

My dream is to have a full frame sensor- you know the full 35mm instead of a 22mm sensor. No more multiplyin' by 1.6... my 50mm prime will be a 50mm prime and not a 80mm. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III Sensor size 36 x 24 mm (8.64 cm²) Pixel density 2.4 MP/cm²... cost??? OUCH!!! So I won't be getting that one anytime soon.

My XTi is doing what I need it to do so I will not be "upgrading" anytime soon. I am "invested" in the canon line lens wise, and will likely remain so invested.

~e

PS- the A470 is a P-n-S but the poll indicates a choice that folks don't have a dSLR but would like to have one.

Question-

has anyone ever RENTED a lens before? I was looking and found a site that rents them- 1 week with round trip shipping and insurance for $56.00 for that 100mm macro I have been coveting. It'd be a sweet way to see if the lens IS what I am thinking it is and would fit my needs uh... wants.

I went to the FAQ on the site and found this:

quote:

How much of a security deposit do I need?
LPTG: None.

You: None?

LPTG: Right.

You: You mean you won't put a hold of $1600 on my card if I rent the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS?

LPTG: Right.

You: Are you crazy?

LPTG: Maybe.

(they charge 110.00 for the lens mentioned in this quote that is for 1 week this includes the shipping both ways + shipping insurance. 4 weeks would be 245.00 the lens on Amazon.com is 1500.00+ )

Am I crazy for even considering renting?

The Canon XSi and the Nikon D40 or D40X are good cameras. The new Canon XS competes against the Nikon D40/40x and the Canon XSi actual competes with the Nikon D80.

But, you will NOT automatically get better pictures from any of these cameras without spending a LOT of money in lenses and choosing a lens, beyond the initial 'kit' lens, can be agonizing.

You will actually have more depth of field and wider range of zoom with the S3 or one of the Panasonic Lumix cameras. The only good reason for having an SLR is the ability to invest, over the ong term, in great lenses that can be used with future cameras.

you know you could look into the Canon 5D, which is also full frame and much cheaper than the 1D series full frames. canon had some instant rebates last month, and for a while the 5D was "only" $1900. yeah, still expensive, but much cheaper than 1D's. i've been temped to buy it, but i'm going to hold off a bit longer.

The first extra lens that I purchased was the 100mm macro. It is an excellent lens. But, it's a specialty lens that is not likely to be used all that often. I've rarely found it to be suitable to use as a 'walk around' lens.

Here is the exception... Jamestown Powhatan Pole

It was taken at Jamestown using the 100mm Macro in a non-macro mode.

Shutter Priority
Exposure Time: 1/125
FNumber: 4.5
Focal Lenght: 100
White Balance: Auto
Metering: Multi-Segment Evaluative
Flash Fired E-TTLE

Right. I think it is useful for pretty much anything that fits in the frame. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case for things you see when walking around, unless you can back up quite a bit.

However, it's good for more than just macro shots. I also plan to use it for portraits of people.

I also just ordered the 50mm f/1.8 lens, which is only $90. Really wanted the f/1.4,
