Thanks, JJB1222, for the update. Maybe someday I'll do chicken soup in the crock; for now I do it on the stove. (We have soup almost every Sunday - make it Saturday, heat and eat after church on Sunday.)

Kevin emailed me that, at the company picnic today, he had 5 hamburgers for lunch, "so I probably won't be much interested in supper tonight." Yay - I get to skip out on planning a meal! But I still don't know what I will have for supper tonight!

If I get motivated and go to the grocery store, we'll have beef and broccoli stir fry with vegetable fried brown rice. If not, it'll likely be hamburgers on the grill and baked beans.

We're having meatloaf, mashed potatoes, squash out of the garden.

That's one of my favorites!

I think we'll grill some "han-ga-bers" on the BBQ, along with watermelon and carrot sticks. Kid-food again...

I probably should've picked something Kevin won't like, but I'm making roasted potatoes & carrots in the oven. I'll eat up the rest of the corned beef lunchmeat with it.

Shepherd's pie and potato wedges.

Do you have a good recipe for Shepherd's pie? I am dying for that, but all of my recipies seem fake.

Tonight we are having flank steak with spinich and feta cheese rolled in them. (Greek Pinwheels) baked potatoes, and some kind of vegetable.

I know my girls won't even touch the meat so they are getting hotdogs and mac&cheese. I don't usually make two dinners, but when I am making something I KNOW they hate and is not cheap, they get a smaller portion of something else and if they are still hungry, they either have what I made for the rest of us or just be hungry.

Fake? I don't get it. This is what I do. I cook up some meat and vetables like I'm making soup. When it's tender, I add cold broth mixed with cornstarch to make it thick. I pour it into a pan and either put mashed potato over the top or a biscuit topping, then bake at 350 till it's done. About 20-25 minutes.

I would love to make this and have some flank steak I purchased for this purpose, however, I'm afraid to unthaw it and make it, as I don't want it to be tough. Can you explain how you do this?

My shepherd's pie:

brown some ground beef.
Cover with some frozen corn.
Maybe make up some beef gravy and put about half in the dish
Top with mashed potatoes and bake about 40 mins.
Serve with more gravy

SOmetimes I make bacon cheeseburger shepherd's pie and add crumbled bacon and cheddar cheese. However, I don't like this meal so I haven't made it much in the last year.

I make fake shepherd's pie w/ beef, too. I throw it together just like Zoebob, but use frozen veg-all instead of just corn. I'm not a fan of lamb... sometimes it's delish and sometimes gamey tasting. I also use bison some and it's good.

I would also like to know what kombucha is.

HERE is a good description. I am going to try making some when I get back from vacation in August.

Cynthia, how are you making the Kefir without the grains? My grains were free, but I'm still curious...

Thanks for the kombucha info. I'll click the link and see what it is.

The package for the grains says to heat 4 cups of milk to about 190 degrees F. Take some of the milk out and cool it to about 70 degrees. Add the grains to the cooled milk and mix well, then add that to the hot milk. Rather than adding the grains, I add about 2 TBSP of plain kefir. That's all there is to it. This is the result of an experiment to see how much it would take, so I don't know if say 1 TBSP would work or even a teaspoon of it. I haven't tried any different amount, however, I would think 1 TBSP would work, but it would likely take longer to culture.

So, do you always heat your milk? Right now I just put my grains in the jar, add my milk, cover and let it sit for 24 hours.

Yes. I didn't know you could do it without heating the milk first. I thought other things could grow in their if you don't. Apparently not, since you're fine and the milk is already pasturized.

THESE are the directions I have been using, the seem to work well. My milk is definitely turning into Kefir. I think when I have a bit more extra grains I'm going to turn them into juice kefir.

Interesting, Ryanne. It looks like there are various ways to make it. I've never read an explaination like that. I'll have to go over it more carefully. I just scoop some kefir out of my jar and use that.

Ok, so where do you GET the starter culture to use? I've seen bottled kefir, but never the starter.

In an effort to create a simple schedule to count on when school starts and we all get busy, we are going to use a weekly dinner schedule:

Sunday: Soup-Salad-Breadsticks
Monday: Chicken
Tuesday: Mexican
Wednesday: Pasta Night
Thursday: Sandwich Night
Friday: Homemade Pizza
Saturday: Pasta Bake

I do my shopping weekly and hopefully, I can make the most of fresh & sale ingredients for the menu each week.

Last night, Sandwich Night, we had Tuna Salad & Sliced Tomato Sammy, Veggie Crudite, Hard-boiled Eggs & Sun Chips.

Tonight is Pizza Night!

That's cool, Jen. I don't think I could pull off a schedule like that.

Tonight is either chicken & rice or chicken pot pie. I'm not sure yet.

Interesting, Jen, but when will you have leftover night so mom gets a break? Don't forget to put those in there every few days!

I think we're having leftover night tonight. Still have some shredded BBQ chicken to be eaten and mac and cheese from last night. Noah won't be here, so one less "adult" appetite to fill anyway. LOL

Put a request on freecycle or craigslist. I got mine from another Mama on my "other" forum. I would gladly send you some but I don't think I have enough grains yet. HERE is a listing of people who have them available. If you don't mind waiting a week or two then mine might have enough to share. OR if you ask real nice, Monamie might share with ya!
