Info please! I have a real-time Christian friend whose baby was born 3 weeks ago at 31 weeks; she had ingested a lot of blood from her mother (long story) and her stomach was a bit swollen so she hasn't had any milk yet. So my friend has been pumping - frequently through the day and also waking every 3 hours at night to pump. But now, probably due to stress, one boob has dried up completely and she can only pump from one boob. I was wondering about things to boost her supply, and remembered a couple of things from here: one was fenugreek, right? And the other was Mother's Milk Tea, I think. Was there anything else?

Yes fenugreek helps, she can also drink non-alcoholic beer or get some actual hops and eat them in salads/sandwiches, pineapple juice also helps as well as the Mother's Milk Tea. And I second what Kim said, have her keep pumping on the side that has 'dried' up. It could come back relatively quickly if she's able to boost her supply.

Blessed Thistle, Fenugreek(or fennel), Goat's Rue, Oatmeal, Mother's Milk Tea, enough water and calories.

mother's milk tea has worked great for me. I've tried taken fenungreek pills but all those gave me were a headache. My routine for boosting my supply: 1. a cup of cooked oatmeal in the morning 2. 3-5 cups of mother's milk tea throughout the day 3. frequent pumping and nursing 3. only drinking water as a beverage 4. not working out and eating enough calories (as well as drinking enough water) 5. not stressing, taking time to relax and keep at peace (probably the most difficult part!) when my supply dips due to hormones from my monthly period I rely on frozen breastmilk or supplementing because none of the above work until that week passes.

My midwife also recommended alfalfa, nettles, and marshmallow root in addition to things already mentioned.

Yep, as the others said, Fenugreek is one and Mother's Milk Tea, too. You have to drink A LOT of the tea though. I was told at least 5 cups per day. I take 4 fenugreek capsules three times daily and I alternate between alfalfa tablets, also 4X3 and Spirolina, 2x3. Many of the ladies on my low supply support group (located through www.bfar.org) have had some really good luck with Barley Life. I also know many of those women are taking 6-8 different herbal suppliments and some take Reglan or Domperidone as well (both have side effects that I'm not willing to risk). If just the fenugreek or tea don't work she may want to try taking a few different things. Since BFing my latest I've had a number of stressful events occur and each time my supply has tanked for a few days so stress is definitely a factor. I hope that she can find some peace among her happenings and that she has good luck bringing her supply back up.

My BF doctor recommended More Milk Plus from the motherlove.com website. This website has a good reputation and the herbal tinctures there are more powerful than things like the Mother's Milk Tea. Also, herbs and meds (Reglan or Domperidone) can be used together and since they work differently, the outcome can be better than using just herbs or just meds. She probably already knows this, but she still needs to pump on that side that has dried up.

Megan, I found my $35 single electric Evenflo pump to be just fine for occasional use. I used it for when I wanted to go out and also to make some milk for my baby's cereal when he was eating solids. The super duper pumps like Medela and Ameda really are for moms who will be working. Although, if you do get a really good one, they have a good resale value on the internet. Ameda Purely Yours and Medela Pump In Style are the best ones on the market.

ORIGINAL: Yachaddm Mostly for the rare outings. I won't be pumping too much, but I'd like to have some frozen for "just in case" scenarios. I was the exact same thing, occasional nights out with hubby and an emergency stash in case I had to take medication requiring me to pump and dump. I used a hand pump from Medela. It had two "speeds", one to induce let down and one with longer, slower strokes to draw out the most milk. It worked fine. But once BFing is established, you'll want to give the babe at least one bottle a week, even if you don't have to. I let to much time go by, and Nathan started refusing the bottle because he forgot it.

I've left kiddo wtih Jeremy to run to grocery store, it was RIGHT After a feed and I was gone 30 minutes both times. I've only ever pumped to relieve pressure, not to store and she's only ever had 1 bottle as a test at 3 wks. She did great. Haven't had the need or desire to give anything since. Almost all the ladies at the BF group I go to are pumping for their kids DAILY. I don't understand but I don't question either. I did get a weird look when I said I had not pumped in a while and had no reserve built up. But I also don't plan on leaving her for any amount of time longer than a quick run to store after she's had a feeding.
