As agaptos said, it has to do with the start value of the skill they are doing. This new scoring system is so confusing Ain't it just! No, it ain't just at all! Not if one can land on their knees and still win, no matter what "value" is put on it.

To play devil's advocate... Would you be saying the same thing if the positions were reveresed and it was the US gymnast who'd landed on her knees and still won or would you be saying she was lucky or brilliant to have pulled of such a difficult vault?

No, I would still be wondering why she won. When this one (the American) fell off the . . . whatever you call that thing the other night she didn't win. Rightfully so.

Well, I don't know what Spearmon has been eating, but his tongue was blue in the line up for the 200m! Bolt is just unbelieveable. He won the 200m semi, but he was coasting.

I think she was agreeing that the scoring system is "just confusing". I was. quote:
Not sure what the British commentators are explaining, but Tim Daggett went through the whole vault and listed every other form break that should have been deducted that were not. Things like her hands not being on the vault correctly and shoulders not being sqauare . . .he explained that those are supposed to be deductions also. My understanding is that the judges see just the jump, they don't have the advantage of video replays and slow motions to decide their marks so some things are missed, which is the same in the synchronised diving (I think) ~ and I picked up things that the judges seemed to miss in that ~ and while I like diving, I'm not expert in it. I didn't hear there was an appeal on it though, so I can only presume that everyone involved accepted the results. Perhaps we need to accept the rules are confusing and we don't fully understand the hows and whys (and I looked online, but couldn't find much)? A shame that Lolo stumbled in the hurdles.

Yes, I am watching the Olympics, and no, I'm not feeling particularly guilty about it. I know some Christian organizations had called for people not to watch but I'm not participating. Ah, yes, the gymnastics controversy. I think it was unfair for both American gymnasts, and yes, I would be saying that even if they weren't American. Fair is fair. In the last Olympics a South Korean gymnast lost a medal because of some error on the judge's part. They filed a protest, but after the time limit had expired. I felt sorry for the guy and thought he should have gotten the medal. Speaking of judges, the ones for the gymnastics do have access to instant replay. Daggett explained that, too. If they want they can call another panel of judges called the technical committee who call up the replays on a computer. That's why it takes so long these days to get the scores and why you see some judges on the telephone. As somebody pointed out, it wasn't just falling over at the end. That one gymnast made loads of mistakes in the actual vault that should have been deductions. You can't tell me something's not dodgy there. As for Natasha and the other one tying, that was just silly. I don't know why the IOC banned dual medals in gymnastics when they allow it for other sports. Did y'all know that a Japanese gymnast fell off the rings? It wasn't on TV but I saw it on the internet. I think it was during the all-round. He was twirling around and as he came down he just didn't have a strong enough grip. He was unhurt, but it was still shocking to see. Yea Micheal Phelps! And Dara Torres! They rock.

Natasha couldn't have appealed because the judges followed the rule. That doesn't make the rule any less silly, however. In regards to the other American (I can't remember her name), just because she chose to accept it (probably felt that it wouldn't be overturned since they rarely do), doesn't mean that she was fairly treated. As I said, that South Korean gymnast filed an appeal, but due to a technicality, they wouldn't consider it. He had to accept that ruling, but that doesn't stop me from saying it was unfair and he should have gotten the medal. If we all stayed silent about unjust treatment that other people accept, then this world would be a far worse place.

Has Tyson Gay run any events yet? I saw him get injured in the trials, so I was wondering if he would be able to run anything here.
