To those who listed James Jamerson: is there some reason you left of Bob Babbit - the other bass player from the Motown studio? They were virtually interchangable. Both really great!

There's also the somewhat controversial Carol Kaye, Motown's west coast session bassist. There's debate over whether or not she played on some of the songs that James got credit for, but most evidence is in his favor and not hers.
Still, she's a good player.

As far as the "best", there is no best, imho, but there are a lot of great players and so many unknown guys who could seemingly out-play the well-known names...Andre Gouche, Oskar Cartaya, Jerry Watts, my buddy Steve over on the Gospel forum, Marcus Miller, John Pattitucci, Robertino Pagliari and so on...

Amongst the ladies, I forgot Miss Kaye...the original who "paved the way" for Alyssa and the other lady bassists. I also forgot Wendy Drennen from Fireflight (out of EUSTIS FLORIDA!), and of course, DEBRA KILLINGS!!

As for the all-time greats, period, one name I forgot so far: Israel "CACHAO" Lopez, the mambo pioneer from Cuba who died in March here in Coral Gables. As a proud Latino, I have to give Cachao a shout-out!

This is true. Just about everybody brings something to the table and there is room for a little bit of everything. No dobut, the primary job of a bass player is the keep the groove together often in conjuction with a drummer , but I have a great appreciation for musicians who go outside of the traditional boundaries of their instrument. I have a profound admiration for guys like Jamerson and Jackie Steet, but I also enjoy and appreciate what someone like Victor Wooten has to offer too.

Chris Squire - Yes
Cliff Burton - Metallica
Geddy Lee - Rush
Tony Levin - King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, also session player for Phil Collins and Brian "Head" Welch

As Ben mentioned above me, Justin Chancellor of Tool. I'm also a big fan of Flea from the Chili Peppers as well.

I'm hearing a lot of votes for John Entwhistle here. I've never listened to the Who that much, but mow maybe I will. I enjoy listening to almost anyone who's really good, as long as it's not hip hop or satanic death metal.

Run, not walk, to the nearest record store and purchase The Who's "Quadrophenia." Listen to the riff's Entwistlw is playing on "The Real Me" - pure genius!

By the way, check out this Warwick Entwistle bass: http://www.warwickbass.com/basses/buzzard_ltd.html

Yes, the bass lines on "The Real Me" can send chills up your spine.

We got an early taste of John's genius on "My Generation."

Go to youtube and search for John Entwhistle isolated...you'll find a video for "Won't Get Fooled Again" that will blow you away.

BTW, the mentions of James Jamerson got me thinking: isn't he the guy who, at least during one session as part of the funk brothers, laid on the floor of the studio while playing? Seems I saw that on some documentary.

Mike

The lying down story reminded me that I forgot two of my favorites funk bassists, Verdeen White of Earth, Wind, & Fire, and the amazing Bootsy Collins of P-Funk/Funkadelic.

And don't forget Larry Graham from Sly's band.

Also, I just 'discovered' a bassist who's been around for decades named Michael Manring.
Search YouTube to see his amazingishness.

Terror-Form -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (12/13/2008 2:10:04 AM)

No where did I see Bootsy or Stanley Clarke... Only one or two votes for Victor Wooten (who I believe would exhaust flea).

There are some greats mentioned but what about the bass players who really knows what bass was all about? Geddy Lee comes to mind but there are others like the bass player for the Doobie Brothers and Grand Funk Railroad. Sure, they didn't wiz out bass solo's or slap and tap genius but, they knew the art of timing, tone and where to fill the dull spots (which, in my opinion is the real job of a bass player). On a modern note - the bass player for Dream Theater hits this mark as well :)

Any other Bass Players we may have forgotten??

LOL, yeah Will is definitely a good player and gives a great concert. He might make it to the top of the "best human beings that play bass" list, but...tough to say his chops are tops all time.

As for my vote, I'd have to say: Dietrich Buxtehude. Anyone who JS Bach would take 3 months off to travel around with (essentially becoming a groupie), must have the greatest instrumentalist hands of all time. Yes, I know he was an organist, but I'd put his left hand up against any rock, jazz, country or whatever bassist in history. Which spawns a spin-off question: bass guitar or keyboard bass? [:D]

I thought it was bass guitar or string upright bass players.

If we include keyboards, we have to list Ray Manzarek of the Doors. I was in HS during their height of popularity but it was about 15 years later I found out they had no bass player other than Manzarek, who had a 2 octave bass board mounted on top of his Fender Rhodes. How anyone could keep that bass groove going while improvizing those syncopated jazzy solos is way beyond me. (like Riders on the Storm)

girlbassist -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (12/22/2008 4:14:06 PM)

RLJ, Ah! The Lemmy love! [;)] My daughter has a toy guitar that plays Ace of Spades. I can't help but sing along to it when it comes on.

BarlowGuy, it warms my female bass playin' heart that you listed a bunch of awesome gal players. Some of my favorite players are Ginger Reyes (now of Smashing Pumpkins), Mia Richards of Gretchen, and Leah Randi (touring bassist for Pink and Abandoned Pools). Kim Gordon and Tina Weymouth will always have a special place in my heart because they were holding down the low end before a lot of women were doing it. D'Arcy of the Smashing Pumpkins was one of the first woman bassists that I took notice of. I'm not attracted to the typical folks who show up on 'best bassists' lists. I'm more attracted to someone who can hold down a tight groove with some warm tone although Les Claypool is pretty cool.

How about Andrew Gouche, Maurice Fitzgerald, Reggie Young, Reggie Parker and Terrance Palmer? They are among some of the best in gospel.
