Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) ain't too shabby either. The guy invented the 12-string bass, practically, and really laid a solid foundation for that band.

BarlowGuy, it warms my female bass playin' heart that you listed a bunch of awesome gal players. Some of my favorite players are Ginger Reyes (now of Smashing Pumpkins), Mia Richards of Gretchen, and Leah Randi (touring bassist for Pink and Abandoned Pools). Kim Gordon and Tina Weymouth will always have a special place in my heart because they were holding down the low end before a lot of women were doing it. D'Arcy of the Smashing Pumpkins was one of the first woman bassists that I took notice of. I'm not attracted to the typical folks who show up on 'best bassists' lists. I'm more attracted to someone who can hold down a tight groove with some warm tone although Les Claypool is pretty cool.
I have always had a lot of respect for Fanny, the first all female rock band. The Millington sisters were really good - Jean on guitar and June on bass.

Honorable mention: Jennifer York of Rachel Rachel and Lisa Brigantino from Les Zeppelin.

How about Andrew Gouche, Maurice Fitzgerald, Reggie Young, Reggie Parker and Terrance Palmer? They are among some of the best in gospel.

Andrew Gouche is awesome!!! I've seen him live many a time and is a local fav.

Dave W. mentioned Jennifer York....she rocks!!! Rachel Rachel's "Carry On My Wayward Son" was tight!!!

Being a bass player myself, I enjoy several bassists but am rather torn between Roger Waters of Pink Floyd and Cliff Burton of Metallica. However, I will say Burton, largely because whereas Pink Floyd avoided the trap of commercialism even without Waters, Metallica sold out even during the Jason Newsted era, which began shortly after Burton's tragic and accidental killing in September 1986. Cetainly Burton was a Most Valuable Bassist.

Someone mentioned Paul's Hofner Bass autographed by all 4 Beatles. How old was this guitar? John's been dead since 1980. I'm glad someone mentioned Sir Paul.

Another great bass player who may or may not be in the band anymore was the guy who played Paul in the band 1964 The Tribute. Why? Because he was ambidextrous on the bass!He played in that band so he played like Paul but he also played in a non Beatle band (he told me all this) so he played the other way. I don't know anybody who can do that.

Everybody named some great Bass players. Who was the Bass player in Toto or didn't that have one? I can't remember. My sister had a few dates with their drummer Jeff Porcaro and she know all the brothers. We are also friends with his cousin.
