I personally like Abraham Laborial, but I would be interested in hearing what you all think.

mapachito13 -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/19/2008 10:12:59 PM)

My vote is Geddy Lee of Rush and Chris Squire of Yes.

Stratplayer -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/19/2008 10:32:59 PM)

Marcus Miller.......and there we have it; the question has been answered. No need to ponder any further. This thread is now closed. Time to move on people [:D]!

(Do you think that I just might be huge Marcus Miller fan?)

Since he is a bass player who also played the clarinet (like your truly) I would be willing to consider him for the position! [:D]

The best bass player of all time? Hmmm. I think there are too many to really name so here is a list as far as I'm concerned, and I'm a bass player so here there are and not necessarily in any particular order:

Victor Wooten
John Patitucci
(and yes) Marcus Miller
(the best of motown) James Jamerson
Jaco Pastorius (may God rest his soul)
Stanley Clarke
Stu Hamm
John Clayton
Jeff Berlin
Bunny Brunel
John Entwistle
Geddy Lee

I could and should go on, but I mean there are just so many great bass players all of the above could be the best EVAH!

My first choice. This man was a genius, plain and simple.
Lee Sklar
Donald "Duck" Dunn
Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group)

JStucki76 -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/20/2008 9:18:30 AM)

Geddy Lee would be on the short list. I also really like Donald Dunn.

But as a drummer, the one I'd really like to play with more than anyone is Flea. As long as he keeps his pants on.

I saw them live at the Roxy in Hollywood shortly after the release of their first album with the funky, colorful, cover art. I was three feet away from Flea. Even in that small place it was an awesome show. I still think that was their best album. Raw punk funk. But that guy could slap that bass into submission.

In jazz there are so many great bass players it would be too hard to choose but Jaco did stand just a little taller in that arena.

percussionlover -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/20/2008 11:15:15 AM)

my best friend Rory Pastorius 's big bro.....Jaco Pastorius !!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm grateful that i spent alot of time with Jaco as a friend & jammin with Jaco too.
Rory's son David Pastorius is probaly in my opinion, almost as good as his uncle Jaco on bass..
if you want to check David Pastorius out,go to Youtube & i think your mouth will drop on how good David is....

Hayseed -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/20/2008 12:29:47 PM)

John Entwhistle
Donald "Duck" Dunn
Geddy Lee
Bruce Thomas
Will Lee
Jaco
Victor Wooten
Les Claypool

... really depends on which style of music you're talking about. Although the cats I've mention can crossover very well.

I heard a live version of 5:15 on XM today that would make me agree with you. Absolutley astounding.

Many of the others mentioned are excellent as well - Abe Laboriel, Lee Sklar, John Paul Jones, Jaco P.

As far as jazz, I'd like to add Jimmy Garrison and Paul Chambers.

Stratplayer -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/21/2008 7:41:04 AM)

This guy may not be as well known as many of the other names mentioned (including Mr. Miller), but you can't over look Bill Clements. He continues to groove despite loosing about half of his right arm.

Bill Clements

I'm hearing a lot of votes for John Entwhistle here. I've never listened to the Who that much, but mow maybe I will. I enjoy listening to almost anyone who's really good, as long as it's not hip hop or satanic death metal.

Run, not walk, to the nearest record store and purchase The Who's "Quadrophenia." Listen to the riff's Entwistlw is playing on "The Real Me" - pure genius!

By the way, check out this Warwick Entwistle bass: http://www.warwickbass.com/basses/buzzard_ltd.html

Just an aside:

I was in Lost Wages last weekend and caught the Beatles "Love" show by Cirque de Soleil, in the gift shop, on display, was Paul McCartney's Hofner bass signed by all four Beatles. They had a guy wiping the drool off the glass every hour![:D]

I like the styling of that violin style bass.

duderox4lisa -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/22/2008 8:08:15 AM)

Geddy Lee
Geezer Butler
Steve Harris
Cliff Burton

HERE it is.

DaveW -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/24/2008 1:27:43 PM)

To those who listed James Jamerson: is there some reason you left of Bob Babbit - the other bass player from the Motown studio? They were virtually interchangable. Both really great!

No one mentioned Mel Schacher of Grand Funk, one of my favorites. Showed influence from Jamerson and Babbit.

Other names I would like to add to the list:

Glen Cornick of Jethro Tull and Wild Turkey
Klaus Voorman - German studio bass player (most sought after in Europe) and briefly with Plastic Ono Band
John Paul Jones - England Studio and then with Led Zeppelin
Jay Truax - Love Song and Paul Clark & Friends. Also did studio work on early Maranatha recorings.

BarlowGuy25 -> RE: Who is the best bass player of all time. (11/28/2008 6:40:05 PM)

You guys may still think I'm a stalker or something, but I actually did buy a 1998 Squier P-Special and just spraypainted the pickguard gold to look like Alyssa Barlow's bass (it's bright red). Now that's devotion to a band who has helped me stay connected to my faith and my Jesus and is still getting me through these tough times w/bipolar/Asperger. It ain't easy living with this cocktail of afflictions...but playing bass has sure helped.

Alyssa is not the only female bassist I enjoy...I have long have had a thing for chicks who play bass (and there's a lot, it seems, it looks always as if playing bass is a very female thing while guitar is more male).

Other great ladies on bass:

Tal Wilkenfeld - 23-year-old Aussie phenom, Jaco-like!!
Esperanza Spalding - Young African-American who became a legend of sorts as she graduated from Berklee (or was it Juilliard??). Great on bass guitar and standup.
Gail Ann Dorsey (not to be confused w/Me'Shell NdegeOcello) - frequent touring collaborator with Gwen Stefani.
Me'Shell NdegeOcello - need I say more? A ground-breaking musician.
Maya Ford - of the "secular BarlowGirls", the Donnas.
Jen Zielenbach - Antigone Rising and Antigone Four, two great NYC indie bands! (they used to be Antigone Rising, but the lead singer "Cassidy" went solo)
Sheryl Crow - Oh, how could I forget her??
Rhonda Smith - Canadian funkster best known for work with Prince.
Kelly Ogden - 'Cause she's awesome!! From the band the Dollyrots.

And finally for now...

Debbie Duke - Beautifully talented and a WONDERFUL woman, from right here in south FLA, longtime collaborator of an amazing beautiful lady named DIANE WARD. Check Ward out, she's a little older, but awesome anyway!! I have met her too...an INCREDIBLE, warm human being, as is Ms. Duke, and their other partner Jack Shawde (guitar). For those here in Miami area, they play at a place called Luna Star Cafe in North Miami every month (lunastarcafe.com). Ward's site is dianeward.com; she has a MySpace page too.

A mouthful...shows you all I'm not so obsessed with Alyssa and the Barlows after all.
