If she is deceitful with a ring, that is her choice, but then I do not want to hear or read her whining how no one ever asks her out...

I actually had an engagement ring from my first wife. Although it was a simple gold ring, it was still and "engagement ring" for us, other than my wedding ring.
This is not new in non-US cultures...

So I guess when it comes to rings all bets are off. You can't tell the marital status of a person by the ring(s) they wear. More confusion for everyone.

I don't really trust the ring theory.
I have enough women friends to know that the single ones wear them defensively all the time. and if a married woman takes her ring off to conceal her status... that is an even worse trap.
To prove her point, a friend told me to put a wedding ring on before we went out...... she told me it would work like a woman magnet, and she was right.
If I want to know ....I ask,,, everything else is a game.

Ring on left ring finger=married. Why bother looking any further.
Since any ring could be a wedding ring, any ring on the left ring finger (even a wire bread tie or a piece of string tied around it) mean unavailable.
For safety sake, sometimes a quick glance can only see a ring a a finger that could possibly have been the ring finger. So that means unavailable. So if you're wearing a ring onthe middle finger you may be losing some contacts do to the quick glance survey.

Yes, the left ring finger ring can be used by anyone to say, "stay away"!

Sure you can. If they have a ring on the left ring finger they are married. If they are not married (engaged), would you really want to date a liar?

See may not be a liar, I have seen all sorts of rings on fingers (birthstones, etc.). Yes, the ring finger issue is determined by religion, ethnicity and culture. All some married people don't wear rings. I know if I were married I would not wear a band because I never wear rings or watches. I don't even wear a watch.

In the USA the third finger on the left hand is the wedding ring finger. A ring there means she is taken. (and since I live in the USA that's all I really care about. I won't be finding a wife in India or Eatsern Europe so their customs are irrelevant to me)
She may not be lying, that is, there may be a very good reason why she is misrepresenting her status, but then again she may be lying. It's enough of a flag to eliminate her from consideration anyway.

In this part of the country there are women from all over the world. There is less of a "ring standard" then there was 10-15 years ago. Even among Christian some where "purity rings". I'm the opposite, as I stated before I will not wear a ring regardless of my marriage status.

I never usually look unless I have a reason to...I figure if I talk to her long enough and she has someone, she'll mention him pretty quickly, especially if she's married.

not everybody plays by your rules JohnO. ..... in fact, calling someone who does not play by your rules a liar is more of a 'johno choice than a fact for all to embrace.
if a single woman wears a ring on her "that finger" it does not make her a liar any more than if you wear shoes with 3 stripes on you left shoe makes you an homosexual....... any more than Steve Jobs wearing blue jeans makes him a poor person.
If the ring has pagan, magical properties, then why does it form such an important part of a Christian wedding ceremony? Does the wedding ring have any religious significance?
Not much
Like many other pagan symbols, the ring has been adopted into Christian ceremonies and rites. There is no Biblical reference decreeing the wedding ring (on that,or any other finger) as a requirement.
why turn an old tradition into a law?

It is a deception for someone to wear a ring there when they really aren't attached to someone.
But I would not hold it against them. I would not consider a person who did that to be a liar or as it meaning they had poor character.

Average cost of $350-$400...? Come on, what happened to the equivalent of 2 months salary and huge rocks? 
If a guy has to wear a mangagement ring he may as well be able to brag about it too!
