Jen, I may trade off between the nails and the massages. Mostly, I'm just trying to find non-food ways of treating myself. After I make some progress with the smoking, I plan to turn my attention to my overeating, so I don't want to make food or eating a "reward" for not smoking.

I know exactly what you mean. I went through the same thing when I was losing weight; the program I followed made a point of trying to help you establish non-food rewards for yourself. food was definitely a habitual reward for myself and DH. We've both come around to a place of occasional indulgence (eg dessert out once a week) because occasional indulgence is something we allow ourselves, rather than because we've "earned" it by eating well all week.

My favorite non-food treats: $10 splurges on things I don't need (eg scarves, hats, cheap jewelery) that would still fit after I continued to lose weight; massages; time to myself. Makeup would probably have been one if I wore it at all.

Least successful reward? Time to myself. DH is an extrovert and doesn't appreciate being "punished" while I am rewarded! LOL Every time I hit a milestone I'd think "Great! I will take the time this week to do my own toenails!" I haven't done my toenails in over four years. It roughly coincides with the time we got married. Maybe that's why so many people go out for pedicures.

Good morning!

It's chilly here this morning! DH and I snuggled under the electric blanket till past 9. I finally had to get up because apparently I slept wrong and got my back hurting. Ouch!

Not doing much else today. I think I'll make a big pot of chili and catch up on some reading.

Going to reward myself for a week smoke-free tomorrow.

Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

Good Morning CWers!

Today I am trying to finalize my plans for Thanksgiving. My mom and dad will be out of town visiting my brother, so it will be me, DH, DS, and DA (dear aunt). I'm trying to decide on the menu, we all want traditional things, but I'm not willing to cook EVERYTHING just for the four of us. This is what I've decided so far:

Roast turkey breast and turkey gravy
"kicked up" Stove Top stuffing
baked sweet potatoes
green bean casserole
jellied cranberry sauce

Anything else I should add?

Still not smoking. DA gifted me a huge 300-count bag of Dum-Dums so I'm set for a while.

Sounds very nice Lisa and also congratulations on still being smoke-free too!

Well, we have decided. We're going out. Just makes more sense, considering.

It's a dreary day here today. Wish it was sunny. Mom and I are going out to celebrate our not smoking, and it would be so much better if the weather were nice.

I think I'm getting a touch of cabin fever. I've avoided going out this past week because I didnt want to put myself in tempting situations, but I'm starting to feel quite depressed. I miss my friends and I miss being socially active. I'm tired of staring at the same four walls, tired of staring at a computer screen (no offense), and tired of having nothing to do.

I need a hug. Any huggers out there????

Hugs to you, Lisa.

And not to bring up stuff from another thread ... but just to say that if your DH does not feel comfortable in your church ... please don't let that stop you from going! I pray that you find a church home where you can grow and win him over by your love and good deeds.

Thanks Mike, Diva, and Di!

Di, I know, right? How silly is it that HE goes to church but I don't???? I started out in the AoG and I think I'm fixing to go back. I hear they have a really good one here in town, with sound doctrine and a really wonderful pastor. I may go check it out tomorrow.

Did somebody mention a hug? Before my current siggy, I advertised my addiction, or one thereof. I'm a huggaholic. I'm not giving it up. Nuh uh, no way. So...

(((((((((((((((((((((LISA))))))))))))))))))))))))))

If you ever need a hug, you know where I am.

Lisa, do you like doing crafts of any kind? That could give your hands something to do, and your mind something else to focus on.

By the way, congrats on the non smoking still. You're doing great. Just keep going. I know you can do it.

This probably sounds like a silly question, but what goes into a green bean casserole other than green beans?

I wouldn't like having somebody massage me, or touch my feet. That just gives me the creeps! My skin crawls just thinking about it! A manicure, maybe, but I'm not really interested in stuff like that. Maybe I'm strange.

Green Bean Casserole consists of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, sliced mushrooms, (some add cheese), covered with a french-fried onion crust. It is soooo yummy!

Trish, you're not strange. I know lots of women who don't like things like that.

Thanks for the hugs, everyone, they are certainly felt and appreciated.

Dinner with Mom was a blast last night! We ate ourselves silly, but then went and walked it off by some high-impact shopping! I picked up the cutest little dress for just $16! Also found lots of Christmas decor/decorations. If it weren't raining today, I'd have the guys start taking the other Christmas stuff out of the shed. I'll probably start decorating inside next weekend.

Missed church today. It was dark because of the rain and I slept too late to make it. I'll make a concerted effort effort to make it next Sunday.

Not much else going on so far. Need to make a small grocery run today but not looking forward to it because of the cold rain...yecch!

Hope everyone is having a happy Sunday!

I make my green bean cassarole with cream of chicken because I hate mushrooms.

I'm going to Giant Eagle tomorrow to get beans and stuff.

Did you check out the AG church?

Me, too!

I started going to an AG church with my DH. This Baptist/Methodist raised girl didn't mind so much because the church is pure awesome. People love God and are serious about him. Hopefully it'll be that way at this new church you want to try, too. :)

AG is Assemblies of God, a charismatic (yet doctrinally sound) denomination. Do you have them in your part of the world?

No, Di, I didn't make it. :( It was raining and dark and I slept too late. Next week I will set an alarm!

Today I am on the hunt for a pumpkin pie. Apparently there's a shortage. Then tomorrow my parents leave for my brother's in Atlanta, Shane has 2 appts at the VA in the morning, then in the afternoon, I need to take my aunt to see her doctor, then later that evening, I have a sleep study scheduled. Busy day!

Oh, still not smoking. Day 10. Not thinking about it much anymore. Must be progress.

Hope everyone is having a good Monday! (or is that an oxymoron?)

My former church was loosely affiliated with the A/G. Now I'm in a church that is decidedly inter-denominational. Some are charismatic, some are not, and it's all good.

I've noticed a shortage of canned pumpkin. I found it at IGA for $2 for a big can (and the same price for the mix that makes one deep dish pie.) Libby's is crazy expensive. Our local Aldi's ran out of pumpkin. Save A Lot had it last month for a decent price.

I bought SO MUCH MORE than beans but got great deals on stuff and used a TON of coupons. Like the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter sticks. I PREFER real butter but sometimes use margarine for baking b/c it's cheaper. Went to buy them and they were $2.50 HOWEVER ... I had a $1 coupon on one and the store had a promotion where you got $2 off your "next" shopping order, so I knew this and paid for them separate. So they were 50 cents each. And then another promotion where you got a 13 by 9 pan free if you bought 4 Betty Crocker products in a single transaction ... I had coupons on each and they all were doubled. So I got frosting for 50 cents, cookie mix for $1.20, stuff like that.

Tina, good, now I don't feel so strange. Roomie freaked out and can't imagine why I'm not using Cream of Celery at least. It's because it goes with turkey, and turkey is poultry, so we're staying in the poultry family.

And this Turkey day, I am running like the proverbial chicken ... In addition to going to my brother's (and bringing half the feast) I am also house-sitting for Laura. So I'm running from her house, to mine, to my brother's back to Laura's and then to my dad's and back to Laura's, probably stopping at home on the way!

Congrats on quitting! Your dinner will taste much better!

Ahh. What you call and AG church, we call an AOG church.

Congrats on still not smoking!

Good morning! Change of plans. Mom is sick and therefore will not be going to my brother's for Thanksgiving. Which means that she may also not be feeling up to going out for dinner that day. Which means I've got two days to put a meal together!

Add that to the fact that I'll be running all over creation today, between DH's appointments and DA's doctor. I have already cancelled my sleep study.

Plus I think I am coming down with something. My ears are all plugged up and I'm coughing up some nasty looking stuff. I really don't have time for illness right now!

Please offer up an extra prayer or two for me these next few days! I think I'm going to need them!

Hmm, I don't think there's a pumpkin shortage here. I'm actually going to NY state this weekend; I could buy some and distribute it. Or did you want it in time for Thanksgiving?

And I realize everybody here is a fair ways from NY... reminds me of European cousins who came to visit us. They flew to Toronto to stay with my aunts and uncles, drove to Ottawa to visit us, and said "We thought we'd drive to Calgary tomorrow; that's only halfway across the country so it should only take three or four hours, right?" We had to then explain to them how much bigger Canada is than Germany.

Lisa, what was your sleep study for? DH was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. Yucky. I'd be willing to bet that whatever you're being studied for will probably improve somewhat on its own just due to not smoking.

Yikes, you are in the wars, aren't you? Could you postpone Thanksgiving until you're all feeling better?

Sleep studies. I don't like them. For some reason, I tend to get so hot that the probes literally fall off. The poor technicians have to keep coming back in to put them back on.

Well, I went to the doc with DA and asked them if he could see me, too. Yep, I'm sick! Seems I have an ear infection and my throat is also swollen. He gave me acouple scripts and I should be feeling better soon. Yay! I was also able to get my seasonal flu and H1N1 shots today, which is a very good thing!

Trish, technically, we ARE postponing Thanksgiving. We are celebrating Thanksmas with the whole family on Dec 12. I will be cooking the BIG meal that day.
We still have to eat that day, though, and I am craving some turkey! I asked Mom about it, and it looks like we'll be going out, so at least I'm off the hook for that!

Jen, the sleep study was because my sleeping Oxygen saturation was lower than it should have been. I was prescribed O2 at night, and I have also stopped smoking so the problem may have fixed itself. I really don't think I have sleep apnea, I don't have any of the usual symptoms and I don't even snore.....much (lol).

What I'd REALLY like is to not have to cook tonight. I may ask DH if he'll do it. He's pretty good to me so he probably will. That's why I love him so much!

Glad you got to see the doctor. No fun to be sick and it is never convenient.

It would seem your oxygen levels will improve now that you are a NON-SMOKER--\o/!

Have you noticed food tastes better and you use less salt?

When I stopped smoking (about 35 years ago) the first thing I noticed was that I was not as groggy feeling in the morning and second that food tasted--well--tastier.

I have noticed that my sense of smell and taste are much improved. I didn't use much salt before, so that really hasn't been an issue.

I still wake up a little groggy, though, but that's just me, probably.

Well, I'm going to bake some pies today and make some pumpkin bread. I can deal with not having leftovers, but we gotta have some desserts here!

Other than that I'm just taking it easy and trying to feel a little better. It'll probably be a lazy day today.

Hope everyone has a lovely day and for those celebrating the holiday tomorrow, Happy Thanksgiving!
