Can I just give an opinion on this ratings thing?

From a personal point of view I don't feel the ratings idea has any value. I can't tell, as a poster, what was interpreted as a good post or a bad one. Therefore, I am unable to improve on what I say.

After looking through the feedback and helps forum and the FAQ's I can't really find the specific reasons for the ratings system other than for CW's benefit which must be that they want to determine what people like which leads me back to the same problem. How do we, as posters, know what is liked or disliked since we post several posts and do not ever see what is getting good ratings and what isn't.

It's too frustrating!

Michelle,

It's like post counts. Post counts have very little to do with how long you've been here or the quality of your posts. However, that's not to say that one's post count has NO value, because it does tell us of a member's degree of involvement.

Points are similar. Your score has little to do with how long you've been here or the quality of your posts, although we're trying to discourage frivolous scoring to reverse that situation. Like your post count, saying your score has little value is not saying it has NO value, because like the post count, it tells us about your involvement in our community. Your score tells us how you're perceived by others, where you post, and your poster personality:

Fun - your score will be higher.
Serious - your score will be moderately high.
Confrontational - your score will be lower.

If you have a high score, you're probably a fun poster. You likely post a lot in fun threads and/or have a few friends in the community. This can also be in combination with a moderate amount of serious posts which have been rated highly be others. Thus, your poster personality can be a combination: in this case, mostly fun/partially serious.

Although fun posters can be serious when they wanna be, a poster with a moderately high score is more likely to be a serious poster who posts good stuff. Not all serious posters who post great stuff will have a high score, as not every good poster posts in the fun areas, and some don't have a lot of buddies online here. That's okay - such posters will have moderately high scores. Again, this can be a combination of mostly serious/partially fun.

If you have a relatively low score, that can indicate a few things. If your post count is also low, it usually means you haven't been here for a while, though there are exceptions, as everyone's post count was reset on April 11th when we launched the new forums. If your post count is high, but your score is low, that usually means you spend time in heated areas like theology or current events, where posters who disagree will dock points, and you are probably more of a confrontational poster.

Thus, as you see, your score can actually tell us where you spend time posting, as well as your "poster personality" as it were. Does that make sense? :-)

I can understand that, but by the logic of you last post, the score should not be tied into the ratings (which I strenuously object to, BTW). Why should someone be rated a "New Member" or an "Junior Member" just because they are spending time in the hot topic folders, being knocked for their opinions, but are very involved.

**Edited my original quote. It should now read "score" instead of "post count"**

As Fritz has said, the scoring system is still being evaluated, as is subject to change. We're discussing just what you've said as a possible change.

I think Rating here in a Christian forum is over-rated.

I do believe that good responsible posting including the fun ones should be rewarded and in such a way that the posters can actually see the affects of good posting. This could be an incentive for everyone to put more thought into what they say.

It took me 10 minutes to write this one because I agonize over every word.

I would think that 'hits' would be more important than 'scores'.

I spend my posting in just a few 'fun' areas. But I read and spend more time and learn more, in the more 'serious' topics.

Just my opinion...

Well, for some reason I've gotten the idea that rating people for fun such as in the hsing chat thread was discouraged. If this is the case, then your comments don't make sense, Ben, (respectfully said, of course) I've hardly used it since because I got the impression we weren't supposed to do that.

Now I only rate someone if I really like what they said. I'd rather not dock someone. Just because I don't like what someone said doesn't mean I should go around docking points. It seems so...petty.

Thank you.

For the record, I don't dislike the scoring itself, I think the points can be quite fun when use right.

Thank you for taking the time to express your feedback on this topic.

As previously stated the rank system is still under review and may be altered without further notice.
